PEUGEOT has introduced two new 406 models on the Australian market, a 3-litre six-cylinder 406 SV and a 2.1-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, the STDT, joining the 2-litre 406 ST that has been on the market here for about a year.
The top-of-the-range Peugeot 406 SV is powered by a 3-litre, quad-cam, 24-valve, V6 engine that the importers say should satisfy the people wanting more power and luxury. The all-new engine produces 144kW of power and 267 Nm torque and reportedly propels the car from 0 to 100kmh in 8.2 seconds and does the standing 400 metres in under 16 seconds.
The car comes with a choice of electronically-controlled, three-mode, four-speed automatic (at $54,500) or five-speed manual transmission (at $52,000). The 406 SV is also equipped with a passively armed engine immobiliser, auto rain-sensing windscreen wiper system, alloy wheels, front and rear fog lights, an oil-level indicator, and wood-grain trim on the doors and dash panel. Leather trim in grey or beige is an option and costs $3500.
The 406 STDT turbo-diesel comes with a 2.1-litre, 12-value turbo-intercooled four-cylinder engine and is available as a five-speed manual only at $43,500, plus on-roads. The makers claim the 406 STDT can do 1000 kilometres on its 70-litre tank) and has a fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway and 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving conditions.
